Bread and Word

Presiding over Communion recently, I was impressed to ponder the Word and the Bread.  The Word of God, spoken to the Israelites in the desert and quoted by Jesus to Satan in the wilderness of His temptation, is that "man shall not live by bread alone, but by every Word that comes from the mouth of God." (Deut 8:3, Matt 4:4) And, on the night of His betrayal, Jesus lifted up the bread, blessed and broke it, saying "Take, eat; this is My Body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of Me." (Matt 26:26) The living Word broke bread and used it to symbolize His Body, His very Self that would be broken for us.  Indeed, Jesus is every Word that comes from the mouth of God by which all men can live!
